1. CRY 2. HAVE SEX 3. FIDGET 4. SHOUT 5. BE UGLY
We women are undoubtedly on the receiving end of many an office or business world “double standard” and need coping mechanisms to handle them. Shouting from the rooftops that it is just not fair is not going to change a thing. We need to try and understand why these double standards exist and attempt to be the victor over them.

WARNING! SELF DOUBT CAN KILL YOU! Imagine you are waiting at a traffic light, in a rented car, in a town you have never visited. The traffic is chaotic (compared to your hometown) and you are unsure of where you are going (okay you are completely lost!) You do not feel completely comfortable with where the windscreen wipers and indicators are yet, so you are filled with buckets of self-doubt. While this entire mish-mash is going on in your mind someone HOOTS! Your immediate reaction is to think “Oh my gosh, they must be hooting at me (and definitely not one of the other 300 cars at the 4-way traffic intersection), I must be stuffing something up. Am I suppose to turn left, give way to the huge truck behind me, maybe I have my car in reverse, am I about to cause an accident or get a fine?” So you take all this adrenalin and pump it down your right foot, in order to rectify a situation you are now convinced is your fault, which lunges your car forward into a cross stream of traffic – and possible death!

Are your eyes fixed on the chair you are heading directly for, or are they smiling back at the faces that are looking at you? What is your mind doing? Is it running wild wondering what people are thinking about your outfit / weight / base concealed pimple, or is it taking in the surroundings and absorbing the 'vibe' in the room? What's your posture like? Are your shoulders slightly slumped with your chin dipped towards the floor a little (in light of the 'belief' that if you can't see them, they can't see you!) or are your shoulders back and your chin parallel to the floor, showing maximum body presence? |
| How is your breathing? Are you unconsciously holding your breath - at best taking in very shallow gulps (the quiet ones - in case anyone hears you!) or is your breathing full, deep lung filling stuff? |

As women we can hardly ignore the fact that a bias still exists across many job categories at the blue, pink and white-collar levels. Political correctness, with regard to gender, was originally intended to combat sexist attitudes, sexist language, and gender inequalities, which would give women equal opportunities. The irony is that the vast majority of both men and women feel that political correctness has become an oppressive concept, which stifles our freedom to say what we truly feel, without having to worry about editing every one of our sentences!
